The History Behind Palma’s Cathedral of Santa Maria

Palma is filled with some fantastic sights. There’s beaches, museums and cobbled streets galore, and of course, the famous Cathedral of Santa Maria, affectionately known as La Seu.

This beautiful architectural marvel has a history filled with magic, legend and cultural significance. If you’re planning on visiting Palma some time soon, learn all there is to know about the history of the Cathedral of Santa Maria in Palma here…

Built in 1229

The story of the Cathedral of Santa Maria begins in the early 13th century following the Christian conquest of Mallorca in 1229. King James I of Aragon decided Palma needed a grand cathedral to celebrate this monumental victory and so the site was chosen for its stunning location on the former Moorish Mosque. The construction began in 1230.

One of the most remarkable features of La Seu is its impressive Gothic façade, which took almost 400 years to complete!

From Fortress to Sanctuary

Interestingly, La Seu was also known for its defensive qualities in its early years. With its towering walls and strategic location overlooking the sea, it wasn’t just a place of worship—it was a fortress. This dual purpose meant that Palma’s residents felt spiritually and physically protected. Over the centuries, the cathedral's role has shifted from a stronghold to a serene sanctuary, reflecting the peaceful evolution of the island.

Gaudí's Spanish Sabbatical

In the early 20th century, the renowned architect Antoni Gaudí, famous for his work on the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, had a brief fling with La Seu. He was called in to help with some renovation work in 1904. His modernist touch included redesigning the cathedral’s choir stalls and creating a more open, airy space within/
